A London childhood
Percy Cornelius Taylor was born in Hackney on March 20, 1872 and spent much of his life south of the River Thames. Census and family records place him in a working London household rather than a long-established musical dynasty.
He was reportedly a choirboy, but the surviving record of his early adult employment is mainly clerical. At different points he was described as a clerk or accountant. His route from office work into professional music is not fully documented.
Marriage to Clara “Clarissa” Taylor
Taylor married Clara Alice Davis, née Talbot, in 1906. She performed in music hall under the name Clarissa Talbot. Their connection places him within London’s entertainment world even where his own engagement history remains incomplete.
The marriage had reportedly become difficult before 1912, but claims that Taylor joined Titanic simply to leave Britain or work his passage to America are speculative. The passenger and employment records establish his place in the orchestra, not his private motive for accepting the voyage.
Piano and possible additional duties
Historical records usually identify Taylor as a pianist. Titanic’s main ensemble also included Theodore Brailey, another pianist with training on other instruments. Two men associated with piano did not require two pianos at every performance.
It is possible that one or both musicians took other parts when the group moved or changed size. Sources suggest Taylor may have played another instrument, but the evidence is not firm enough to name one as certain. The band guide therefore lists piano as his established role and marks other duties as unresolved.
The main quintet
Taylor is generally assigned to the main quintet with Hartley, Brailey, Clarke, and Woodward. The group performed for passengers in public rooms during the maiden voyage.
If music began near the forward grand staircase after the collision, an available piano may have been used at first. Later reports place musicians outside. The sequence remains a reconstruction, and it is not possible to state exactly what Taylor played or where he stood at each stage.
Death and estate
Taylor died with the other seven musicians. His body, if recovered, was not identified. His estate was administered to his widow later in 1912.
Contemporary newspaper descriptions presented him as a skilled and thoughtful pianist, although some reports gave his name incorrectly. The inconsistent reporting helps explain why careful modern biographies must return to civil, passenger, probate, and family records.
A biography with honest limits
Taylor’s page cannot provide the same detail available for Hartley, Woodward, or Brailey. That difference should not be filled with invented certainty. The best-supported outline is a London-born man with clerical and accounting experience, a marriage within the music-hall world, and a later professional role in Titanic’s orchestra.
