Why do some sources say 12,400 feet and others 12,500?

Deep-ocean wrecks are not sitting on a perfectly flat floor. Titanic’s bow, stern and debris field occupy different points and elevations across a large site, and different expeditions may quote the depth of a particular section or round from metres into feet.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution describes the 1985 boiler discovery as occurring under more than 12,400 feet of water. NOAA and other modern institutional summaries commonly use about 12,500 feet or 3,800 metres. Those figures do not represent a historical disagreement; they are rounded descriptions of the same deep-ocean location.

How much pressure is there at the Titanic wreck?

Can scuba divers reach the Titanic?

No. Titanic is far beyond the range of recreational and technical scuba diving. Even record-setting human dives without a pressure hull are measured in hundreds of metres, not the roughly 3,800 metres needed to reach the wreck.

People who have visited Titanic did so inside deep-ocean submersibles built for extreme pressure. Robotic vehicles are also widely used because they can stay down longer, carry heavy cameras and sensors, and avoid placing a human crew in the deepest part of the mission.

Modern Titanic expeditions rely on a surface ship as much as the vehicle itself. Teams must launch and recover equipment, track the vehicle underwater, process sonar and video, manage weather and maintain communications through kilometres of water.

How long does it take to reach the Titanic wreck?

There is no universal travel time because vehicles descend at different speeds and missions use different procedures. A practical public figure is roughly two hours or more each way. RMS Titanic, Inc. describes about two hours to arrive at the wreck during crewed dives, while the full mission may last many more hours.

The descent is not simply a fast drop. Operators monitor navigation, vehicle systems and water conditions while the support ship maintains position. The final approach also becomes slower and more deliberate when the vehicle is close to the seabed and wreckage.

A visitor can therefore spend four or more hours of a mission just travelling down and back up, before accounting for the time spent actually observing Titanic.

Where is Titanic at that depth?

The wreck lies in the North Atlantic southeast of Newfoundland. NOAA expedition material places the centre of the bow near 41°43′57″N, 49°56′49″W, roughly 350 nautical miles from Newfoundland.

The bow and stern are also separated by roughly 2,000 feet, with a broad field of wreckage between and around them, so the wreck is much more than one latitude-and-longitude point.

Why can’t the Titanic simply be raised?

Depth is only one obstacle. Titanic is not an intact ship waiting to be lifted. It is two weakened hull sections plus a broad debris field. The bow is partly embedded in sediment, the stern is heavily crushed and many structural parts have deteriorated for more than a century.

Any lifting plan would have to work nearly four kilometres below the surface, attach equipment to fragile steel, handle enormous loads and then conserve material after it left the cold salt water. Recovered objects already require long and expensive conservation; an entire hull section would multiply those problems dramatically.

The wreck is also protected as a historic and memorial site. Modern work is centred on mapping, monitoring, research and legally controlled conservation rather than an attempt to bring up the whole ship.
