Iceberg damage exceeded Titanic's subdivision system

Titanic was divided by transverse watertight bulkheads. Doors low in the ship could be closed from the bridge, and the design could survive certain combinations of flooded compartments. The collision, however, admitted water into at least five forward compartments. That was beyond the condition the ship could remain afloat with.

The damage was likely a series of openings and distorted seams rather than one continuous gash. The total open area did not need to be enormous. What mattered was its distribution across enough compartments to pull the bow progressively lower.

The bulkheads were watertight across their lower sections, but they did not form sealed boxes all the way to the upper decks. As the flooded bow sank deeper, seawater rose above the top of one bulkhead and entered the next compartment. Pumps could slow local flooding but could not remove water as quickly as it entered and spread.

Thomas Andrews understood the design limits and concluded that the ship had little time. The watertight doors had done their job within the system's limits; closing them could not reverse damage that already spanned too many spaces.

Titanic was travelling at roughly 22 knots when the iceberg appeared. The night was moonless and the sea unusually calm. In rougher water, waves breaking against an iceberg might have made its base easier to see. On this night the lookouts described a dark mass ahead with little warning contrast.

Once Fleet rang three bells and telephoned the bridge, Murdoch ordered a turn and engine action. The time between sighting and impact was very short. A lower speed would have provided more time and reduced the energy of any collision, although no reconstruction can prove exactly what would have happened under every alternative manoeuvre.

Warnings mattered because they should have changed risk decisions

Ships had reported bergs, growlers and field ice throughout the day. Some warnings reached Captain Smith; others were handled in the wireless room. The Mesaba report, which described heavy ice in Titanic's path, was not delivered to the bridge before the collision.

Why the Californian belongs in the rescue discussion

Carpathia responded to Titanic's wireless call but was too far away to arrive before the sinking. Californian was stopped in ice and much closer according to the 1912 inquiries. Its wireless operator had gone to sleep, and officers who saw rockets did not treat them as a distress emergency requiring immediate action.

The exact distance and whether Californian could have reached Titanic before the final plunge remain debated. The official British finding was that it could have made an attempt and might have saved lives. That issue affected rescue, not the physical cause of Titanic's sinking.

What the wreck added to the cause analysis

The wreck discovery confirmed that Titanic broke into two major sections during the final sinking. It also revealed a wide debris field and very different damage patterns at the bow and stern.
